A symbol of new beginnings and a new day. The sunrise warmed everything it touched, melting away the snow and ice as it thawed the Earth. Today the sun rose on a particularly good day, May the first. This being the day of Thrimilci, the festival of joy and fertility. Many bodies were already out and about as they prepared for the festival tonight. Prepping food, drink, or traditional wear for the fire at dusk. Men gathered early to hunt for game as small parties of women went to gather berries with children. At the chieftain’s hut, a small body still slept, that was, until her mother, Daciana came to wake her,”Valka, daeru, tis time to rise with the mornin”, her mother’s soft voice barely registered to the young girl. Valka grumbled and shook her head before rolling over. “Didn’t stay up all night again did ya lass”, her mother's question laced with a chuckle, ”ya kno, it’s not good for young lasses to stay up past their bedtime. This is why.” Even at the age of six, Valka liked to stay awake long into the night and stargaze. She had drawn all the constellations that her father had shown her. Finally, her mother walked over and shook her gently, ”come now, yer father is waitin”, Valka finally groaned and sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes as she looked to her mom, ”I’m coming modir”, her voice still filled with the need for sleep, but she knew her mother was relentless and would keep at it until she moved. Getting up Valka quickly dressed and ran out to find her father, Torryn, the chief of the clan. Spotting him quickly as he stood and talked to two other men, her father’s right hand Hagan and a man that had always given her the creeps, Gundahar. Having known Hagan since she was born he was like an uncle to her, as if it were up to her Gundahar would be thrown out. The man hadn’t done anything wrong, that she knew of, but his very presence gave her a bad feeling as if he had. Running up to her father, Valka wrapped her arms around his leg before looking up to him with a bright smile. Torryn glanced down and picked her up, ”tis about time you woke with the risin sun my saet stelpa!” Tossing her into the air before catching her again, they both laughed. Torryn held her as he continued to speak with the others, she proclaimed uncle poking and prodding at her to make her squeal in delight. Soon her father put her down, ”could I go play with the other children fadir?” “Of course daeru”, he told her, Valka ran off, but she didn’t go play with the other children. Being a free spirit meant she liked to explore, see what new things she could find. Honestly, Valka was known to wander off on her own, her father setting scouts to watch her from afar should she ever get into trouble. Setting out to find a new adventure as she headed deeper into the woods. Stopping every so often to check under rocks or gather berries to nibble on. After spending the majority of the day out in the woods, Valka decided it was time to head back, but she had not been keeping up with her directions and seemed to have wandered further than she thought. “Fadir .. Modir”, she called. No one answered her call and now the sun was beginning to descend. Back at the homestead, Daciana was frantic, ”where is she Torryn!? I have turned thus damned camp upside down, she’s not here!” “Daciana, astin min, we’ll find the lass. She can’t run that far”, he comforted his wife, but on the inside, he was just as panicked as she was. Having sent out his best trackers and scouts to find his daughter. Their search so far had turned up barren. Valka sat at the bottom of a tree. Having found some berries to keep her full while she waited to be found. Suddenly a snap of a stick rang in her ears, twisting her body to look around the tree. Her eyes widened as a massive shape stood not far from her. “Ohhh noo… a black bear”, slowly she stood while her eyes were still trained on the bear. It was facing away from her. Valka seized her moment and ran, throwing the berries she had as she ran for her life. Hearing the bear's roar as it must have spotted her and then the pounding of paws on the Earth behind her. Valka let out a scream so shrill that anyone should have been able to hear it from a mile away. Lucky for her, it was heard by a scout that wasn’t far off. He began to yell at the other members of the search party and headed for her. Valka looked back over her shoulder as she ran turning to face frontwards again she ran dead smack into something, more like someone. Opening her eyes she looked up and saw Hagan, tears began to fall from her bright blue eyes as she was relieved to be found finally. “There... There is a bear after me”, she proclaimed, quickly getting to her feet as others finally caught up to them. Just as the bear did. Hagan put himself between her and the beast,”no worries lass, I’ve got this”, he spoke softly to her. Hagan was one of the clan's best beast tamers. He had tamed many wolves and horses for the clan. Hagan looked to a younger man and then back to her,”take her home, I am sure Torryn and Daciana would like to see their little lass.” The man nodded and took her hand as he led her home. Once home, Valka looked to the doorway of her home. There stood her father and mother. Daciana had been crying while her father’s face was stoic. Running to her parents she jumped into her mother's arms who scooped her up and held her close. Raising up to look at them both,”I’m sorry modir, fadir. I just wanted to go for a walk and before I knew it I was lost.” “Next time you wish to go for a walk lass, take someone with you”, her mother kissed her cheek. Her father has yet to have said anything, but he didn’t have to. Valka knew he was disappointed in her for lying to him. “Don’t make your mother worry like that again. Oh, and, you won’t be joining the festival”, her father spoke as he moved away from them both. Daciana set her down and looked into her eyes, ”you can’t run off like that lass, your fadir and I were worried sick about you”, Valka leaned into her mother's hand as she brushed back strands of her sun-bleached blonde hair. “I know modir, I’m very sorry”, fighting back the lump in her throat. “I know you are saet stelpa, but ya may want to go convince your fadir”, Daciana slightly smiled. Valka nodded and ran to find her father. Finally catching sight of him in the Grand Hall as he helped some of the others shaft the hogs that were caught. Just as Valka went running inside to her father, a man rushed by her and whispered in his ear. Slowly Valka walked his way as she watched his face twist up in anger, ”men!! Ready for battle!! We ride to our neighbors in the East for assistance. They have been attacked and need our help.” Turning he saw Valka, her eyes wide with fear. ”Fadir, what’s goin on”, she muttered as he picked her up and swiftly made way for her mother. He didn’t answer her. Once reaching her mother Torryn passed her off to Daciana, ”put a hold on the festival daeru, we shall return soon.” He kissed them both and mounted a black stallion that was readied for him,”ég elska ykkur bæði”, he shouted back to them as he and others rode off to the East. Daciana and Valka walked back to the Grand Hall and continued to prepare what they could for the festival. Night had now taken over the skies, twinkling stars covered the blanket of darkness. Valka sat at her window as she waited for her father's return. Her mother silently came in and sat beside her, ”can’t sleep either lass?” Valka shook her head, ”no, I am far too worried about fadir.” Daciana pulled her daughter into her lap and began to braid her hair, ”as am I daeru, as am I.” Together they sat for what felt like the longest night ever as they waited for Torryn’s return. By the time her father had returned the moon was on its own descent to give the sun back the sky. Hooves of horses walked into the village, Valka jumped up at the sight of them and ran out of the front door. Daciana on her heels. “Fadir!”, she shouted and ran to his horse as he dismounted. Her mother followed and then gasped, ”what happened?” “By the time we got there, nothing was left. No buildings stood, just as no one else stood”, just as he spoke Torryn turned with a boy about her age in his arms, ”no one, but this boy. He needs medical attention, has a few burns on him. Take care of him, Daciana.” Her father passed by them both to take the boy into their home and lay him down on a spare bed they had. Daciana got to work quickly. Valka quickly fetched her mother's water and clean rags as she stood by to be helpful when her mother needed them. But after hours of covering the boy in an ointment that would help the burns carefully and making sure, he went to sleep, her parents finally went to bed themselves. This meant that she was now in charge of watching over the boy. Making herself a palate on the floor to lay on, Valka listened but soon slowly drifted off into sleep. The next morning her parents announced to her that the boy would be staying with them, becoming a Blackthorn. Valka smiled. “Oh I almost fergot”, her father handed her a wolf pup, ”I found this little one with him as well, make sure they are both taken care of now.” Present Day The day Dar had joined their family seemed so far away by now, fourteen years to be exact. Valka was now twenty and Dar was twenty-one. Now older, the both of them were best friends. They trained, ate, and enjoyed life together. When Dar had woken up from his coma a few days later after he was brought home, she was the first to be in his sights. Well, her and Thane. He was confused at first, but her parents explained to him what had happened. For days after that, he seemed to be distant and unwilling to speak. Valka didn’t blame him for not wishing to speak to her or her parents. Finally, though, one day while she brought him a plate of food he said thank you. From that moment on the two were inseparable. Valka drove Dar crazy with the adventures she would drag him out on. All through their teen years was she getting them into trouble. Rather it is by her parents or animals he had to quickly move to save her ass every time. She’d heard him nag her so many times about being careful and her response was to roll her eyes and continue onward. And of course, he would follow. Dusk had now begun. Valka stood with her battle ax resting on her shoulders, freshly sharpened. Her gaze overlooks the valley below their homestead. It was beautiful up here. Most certainly in the harvest months when the leaves would turn colors. Right then and there, she decided, she and Dar would be going on another adventure. Turning on a heel she went to find him, ”Dar .. Dar!!!” Finally finding him as he was resting in a chair, his feet propped up on the table and eyes closed. “Good, he didn’t hear me”, silently she crept towards him. Just as she was about to make her final move, he spoke up with his eyes still closed. Valka stood up and shook her head, ”you suck you know that? Anyways, come on, let's go on an adventure.” Dar argued with her, Valka playfully pouted, ”come on! I am tired of being stuck here”, her voice whiny. He still argued, ”that wasn’t going to work, then maybe this will”, she thought, clearing her throat as she stood tall and closed her eyes, chin up, ”I demand adventure!” Valka opened one eye to peek at him before leaning up against the table and groaning. Valka smirked and used the flat end of her ax to knock him backward in his chair, quickly she took off knowing he would want vengeance. Straight into the woods she went. the role player Alias • Vixaria Time Zone • Central Time Other Characters • if any |
