S tars twinkled against a blanket of darkness as night time took over the skies. Cool air moved about the land and danced with the leaves. Soon pinks and oranges began to color the blank morning sky. But tucked away in a small den in the side of a hill was a sleeping figure. The chest of the shadowed figure rose steadily as it slept. The rays of daylight haven’t yet reached into the den to wake the sleeping creature. Sunlight had begun to make a small difference in the cooler air, warming it ever so slightly. When finally the rays of sun had found their way into the darkened hole, stirring the shadow within it. Ghost huffed as daylight broke his sleep, he didn’t yet wish to rise with the sun. Though to no avail, it stirred him into the land of the living. Picking his head up from the dirt floor, Ghost opened his jaws with a yawn. Blinking the sleep from his eyes as he moved to his paws for a good stretch. Shaking his body to remove the dirt from it. Thirst had taken over his wants so he headed for a nearby stream for a drink and a quick bath. Following a small trail down a slight slope. Once there, Ghost looked out over the small clearing that was but a few feet from the stream, nothing to be seen. Bending down Ghost lapped at the water, it was cool to the throat and soothing. As his thirst was quenched, the white wolf slipped into the waters and rolled a moment. Coming out of the water he shook the droplets from the ends of his fur, sending them raining on the grass below him. Now, it was time for breakfast. Having had a decent meal the night before, he wasn’t terribly starving. “A rabbit should do”, thinking to himself. So Ghost headed for the clearing and stopped at the tree line. Crouching, he waited for movement, but thankfully his wait wasn’t long. A small gathering of deer and their young entered the meadow, but Ghost wasn’t in the mood for a fight. He wanted something quick and easy to catch. After several minutes passed he saw his choice in breakfast hopping along. Having the advantage of being upwind, it would be too late when the rabbit noticed him. And now, it was time for a hunt. Slowly moving on silent paws, Ghost crept closer to the small-bodied animal. Only moving while it was busy chewing on grass. Finally, he was within pouncing distance, he took his shot. Using his back legs, Ghost sprang from his position and landed directly onto the rabbit and with a quick jerk, he had won his breakfast. Picking it up and leaving the meadow to return back to the stream. The morning was now in full swing as more animals began to stir and wake for the day. Ghost would spend most of his day sunbathing or strolling though what he had always known, this forest. Laying down beside the water Ghost began to enjoy his meal in blissful peace. The small breezed that came though ran through his coat. The sun warmed him as the rays couched his body. Was a wondrous feeling. Finally full, Ghost drank from the stream and swished his muzzle around in the water to remove the staining blood. Making his mind up for a walk through the forest, Ghost headed down trails he knew. Having nothing particular in mind or no final destination, he let his paws take him anywhere. WORDS TAG |
